My eight year old Portuguese Water Dog was diagnosed in March with left side facial paralysis. She couldn't blink, her lips gaped open so that her food fell out and her whole face twisted to the left side.

Now the left side is getting much better and she can blink again, but now the right side is paralized. We're hoping that it gets better too. Our vet says 60% of cases get better, the others never do. The only thing we're doing is to put an ointment in her eyes twice a day so they don't dry out.

She is also on steroids for another illness, so they may be helping. We checked her thyroid because that is often a cause of facial paralysis and it was low, so we've started her on thyroid meds.

Email me with any questions or if I can be of any help.

Hi Bond, our friend Asta told us about your problems. We are sending healing purrs.

We looked up facial paralysis and this is what it said for treatment
There is no specific treatment for facial nerve paralysis. Any underlying disease should be treated. Animals may need to be medicated with eye lubricants to avoid corneal damage. If keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) or corneal ulcers (defects in the cornea) are identified, they must be treated with appropriate ophthalmic antibiotics.

We don't know what it could be, but perhaps you could get Dr.Marty Becker to give you a suggestion. He has a FaceBook and the address is:

Hi Bond,

I found your blog through Asta and Huskee...so sorry to hear about your condition. We also have not heard of this kind of condition before, so we can't offer much help...but Mom would like to suggest that maybe you could try an acupuncturist like what Joey mentioned.

Mom says she's seen humans who had stroke turn to acupuncture, and while it's not a short-term thing, there has been improvements with the muscles after a period of time with acupuncture. Some humans could even start to walk again after being paralyzed. So, we thought it might be helpful for doggies too coz it's the same concept. Perhaps it could help you a little as you search for other answers :)

Scottie
