Rossi needs help

Hey everyone, visit my new friend Rossi :)

Ok, Rossi got a tiny problem here. His owner suspect that he has got Hip Dysplasia .... hmmmmm .... and he is only 5.5 months old, does anyone have any special advise for him.

I only knows that

1) glucosamine is good for him
2) swimming is good for him
3) slippery floorings are bad for him
4) stairs are bad for him
5) he should watch his weight, however, this maybe a little tricky here as Rossi is still a growing puppy.

Anyone has any advise for Rossi? Help him ok?

Muacks Muacks all the nice doggies :)

Hey Bond!!! Thanks for dropping by my blog, say hi to Boo Boo too for me, I love his life lesson to the STINKIES - FOOOOOOOOOOOOD!! Oh and Thank him for agreeing with me LOL!

Hmmm.... what are Rossi's symptoms and how long has it been? I see that he's limping, but I mean, puppies romp and play and sometimes hurt themselves and they limp or not want to put weight on it.

I guess if it's an intermittent lameness that persists then yes, there is a possibility that Rossi can have hip dysplasia when he grows up, there are also other hind leg related problems.

I think you said he's only 5.5 months old, and the earliest you can x-ray to see if a dog has hip/elbow dysplasia is 6 months. I think that would be the first step for Rossi, have his hips and elbows x-rayed and go from there. Keep in mind that even if Rossi's x-rays at 6 months show normal hips/elbows, he can still be dysplasic when he's full grown just because the joints can still change as the dog grows. However, if hip or elbow dysplasia is present at the 6 months x-ray, 99% of the time, the dog will end up with hip dysplasia.

What I would suggest (because mum told me so) is to let Rossi run at his own pace. Like NOOO jogging him, making him run along a bike, throwing balls and making him fetch etc. I would also limit rough housing with pups who are a lot stronger and rougher. Plays with pups of similar strength or even weaker is ideal. Discourage any type of jumping. This is true for any growing pup due to the growth plates still being open. One wrong landing can injure and may lead to permanent damage to the growth plates. I know mummy has just started to let STINKY do a little bit of ball catching, but very little bit, and she didn't start until a couple weeks ago. STINKY is 7.5 months now.

Swimming should be EXCELLENT for Rossi. It will tire a pup out in no time and yet it places no stress to the joints.

Were Rossi's parents tested hip/elbow dysplasias free??

Hope this helps a little...

Hi Bond,

Sunshade's mum is right. I trust that she had done load of research on this topic. Please ask Rossi to read the following entry from SunShade's Blog. I find it very informative and if possible, I think Rossi's parents should do the same. From his blog, I think he is in Malaysia, right? if not I would recommend my vet for him to visit for acupuncture. I hope that everything turns out well for him.

Hi Miss Sunshade

Thanks for such an informatives comments there..
Definitely does help me and my mummy over here to
improve my hip.. And you are so true especially bout the
x ray which i can't go x ray now till am 6 months old..
My vet did asked me to go back after a month time..actually
he is the one who noticed my obvious symptom when i walk,
and wake up from a down position.. He then examined my both
hip by moving my hind legs backwards.. and there i noticed
i got pain..

My mummy had noticed my problems since she brought me back
when i was only 2 mths plus ..where i have difficulties to
wake up n when walk my hip swivel like a super model..
But back then, everyone said am still young to tell of the
problems.. and i might get certain lameness due to long sleep,
and playing..

Mummy still letting me play ball fetching everyday.. and we have
walkies twice a day bout 10 mins each.. anyway, am forbidden to
jump eventhough i love jumping.. i love swimming!!.. that is my
favourite, but is kind of difficult to find place to swim over
here in my place.. it is kind of sad..

Anyway, having all said, we still need to wait for the x-ray and
test again on my hips next month.. Hope by then, my result show
negative.. In mean time.. my mummy will try source Glucosamine
pills for me.. and with no jumping and no running especially
on the slippery tiles.. i think i can make it.. just hope and pray..

Again, thank you so very much for the advice.. i can never
express how grateful i am to all of you..

kiss kiss..

I gave Rossi some good advice... Coz I have the same prob too but mine's not very serious yet & I don't have hip dysplasia but I do have quite bad hips score. I have a very pronounce sway but I can still run in super sonic speeds & jump high. I've been on glucosamine since I was around 4mth old. It maintained my hips but no improvement lah. I just hope the advice I gave him will help him a little...

Have a nice weekend!
